Rope Access Training is an internationally recognized certification system for working at height using rope access techniques. It equips professionals with the necessary skills to safely perform maintenance, inspections, and repairs in various industries like construction, mining, oil and gas, and urban high-rise structures. The training covers different levels—Level 1 (entry-level), Level 2 (experienced technician), and Level 3 (supervisor)—ensuring compliance with global safety standards. Each course includes hands-on training, theoretical knowledge, and assessments to certify competency. Successful trainees receive an certification, enabling them to work in demanding environments that require skilled rope access technicians.
Topside offers three certification levels:
- Level 1: Entry-level training for beginners with no prior experience. Covers fundamental techniques, safety procedures, and equipment usage.

Each level requires hands-on training and assessments. Level 1 and Level 2 technicians must log work hours before advancing. Level 3 certification allows professionals to manage rope access operations in various industries, ensuring compliance with IRATA’s global standards.
Rope Access courses typically run for five days—four days of training followed by a practical and theoretical assessment on the fifth day. Refresher courses and Verification of Competency (VOC) assessments may take shorter durations, depending on the participant’s experience level. The training schedule ensures that individuals receive comprehensive hands-on practice and theory-based learning. Each session is designed to prepare technicians for real-world scenarios while reinforcing safety standards and rope access techniques. Upon successful completion, trainees receive a certification, valid for three years, allowing them to work in the rope access industry.
A Refresher course is a short training session designed for rope access technicians who haven’t worked at height recently or need to maintain their competency. It reinforces essential skills, safety procedures, and rescue techniques to ensure technicians remain compliant with industry standards. The refresher course is particularly important for technicians returning to work after a break or before renewing their certification. Regular refresher training helps keep technicians updated with the latest safety regulations and best practices, reducing workplace risks and ensuring confidence in rope access operations.
Certification is valid for three years from the date of issue. To maintain certification, technicians must either complete a reassessment before expiry or undergo a refresher course if they haven’t worked in rope access for six months. It’s essential to renew certification on time to remain compliant with industry standards. Level 1 technicians looking to advance to Level 2 must log at least 1,000 work hours over a minimum of 12 months. Similarly, Level 2 technicians must meet experience requirements before qualifying for Level 3.
